How are rice, Japan and Texas connected and when did it all start? What is the significance of Saibara and Kishi? (Suggested source: Handbook of Texas Online) I searched the Handbook of Texas for Rice, Japan, and Texas. Under the entry RICE CULTURE, I found that the rice industry in Texas changed in 1904 when Japanese rice farmers were asked to come to Texas. They brought rice seed as a gift from the emperor of Japan. Japanese rice production began in Webster under the direction of Seito Saibara and his family and colonists. I searched for Kishi and found under the entry JAPANESE that Kichimatsu Kishi settled near Beaumont in 1907. He also brought tenants and families to help work the rice farms. The two groups prospered until WWI when the rice market collapsed. Kishi switched to truck farming.

http://www.asiasociety.org/arts/japanesescreens/index.html
A beautiful display of folding screens.
One of my favorite screens was the following: "Pines and Horses on a Shore
Muromachi period, 16th century
Pair of six-panel screens; ink, color, and gold on paper
Private collection
Cat. no. 13
A sense of energy and movement is created by the galloping horses, the humans sailing into view, the rushing of the river, and the sinuous forms of the “dancing pines.” A variety of techniques of gold and silver decoration add to the rich blues and greens.
Screens on the theme of “pines on the shore” were popular during the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries and are mentioned in contemporary diaries. Although these screens contain no specific indications of a narrative content, the combination of elements—the horses, the distant building, the salt-huts, and the deserted atmosphere—suggests a possible association with Akashi, where Genji was exiled in Chapter Thirteen of the Tale of Genji."
1. I went to the Asia Society web site and under Asia Society worldwide, I clicked on Texas. I clicked on the Texas Center membership application to receive the application. The Center is located in Houston and offers a variety of programs on Asia-related topics.

Then I clicked on archival events - past exhibitions and found that from Jan. 13 - Aug. 15, 2004 this exhibition was at the Asia Society Museum in New York.
3. I went to the Smithsonian Global Sound web site and typed Music of the Shakuhachi in the advanced search box. This database offers music from all over the world. The performer was Yasuda Shinpu (Kotokon).
4. I found 2 Asian American pilots: Katherine Cheung and Ellison S. Onizuka. Ms. Cheung in 1932 became the first Chinese American woman to become a licensed pilot.
There was only 1 talk show host. Lisa Ling appeared on the daytime talk show The View from 1999-2002.
There were 4 mathematicians: Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar, Tosio Kato, Chia-Chao Lin and Shing-Tung Yau. Mr. Yau solved a question in Einstein's theory of relativity by proving that the sum of the energy in the universe is positive.
